From 15 to 19 December, at the Iluzjon Cinema, there will be a review of the works of Sven Nykvist and Ingmar Bergman. The Lodz Film School is a partner of the review.
Born 100 years ago, on December 3, 1922, Sven Nykvist was one of the greatest cinematographers in the history of cinema. He proved many times that thanks to the art of manipulating light, even the most subtle inner human sensations can be shown in the cinema. Called the "Master of Light", the artist won the Oscar for best cinematography twice (for "Cries and Whispers" and "Fanny and Alexander"), and was also honoured with a César for "Black Moon" (1975) by Louis Malle and the award at the Cannes IFF for Andrei Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" (1986). In his extremely prolific output, he developed a unique visual language. He drew inspiration from art, photography and the environment - he perfectly understood Scandinavian light, the severity of which he used to create naturalistic film images.
Together with Ingmar Bergman, they formed one of the most creative duos in the history of cinema, collaborating on 21 projects - from Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) to After the Rehearsal (1984). Nykvist brought Bergman's films to life by replacing high-contrast lighting with more ascetic visuals that explored the souls of the director's characters and conveyed their psychological make up.
The review at the Iluzjon cinema will include Bergman and Nykvist’s films considered the most interesting like "Face to Face" (1976) and "Fanny and Alexander" (1982), but we will focus on less known works and mostly not shown in Poland so far, such as "The Magic Flute" (1975) based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's work or "The Touch" (1971) co-produced with the United States. In Iluzjon we will also present two unique documentaries by Bergman who very rarely made films in this genre. "Fårödokument 1969" (1970) is a film showing the island of Fårö, which at some point became a real oasis of peace for the director, and "The Making of Fanny and Alexander" (1983) - a kind of making-of, allowing us to see what the work of both artists on one of cinema's greatest masterpieces looked like. In Iluzjon we will also show two films directed by Nykvist himself - "One and One" (1978), made with Bergman's actors: Ingrid Thulin and Erland Josephson, as well as the excellent drama "The Ox" (1991) based on a story the cinematographer heard in his childhood. The review will end with the screening of the documentary Trespassing Bergman (2013), presenting the "pilgrimage" of such directors as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke and Woody Allen to Bergman's island of Fårö. The lecture before the film will be delivered by Prof. Tadeusz Szczepański, the greatest expert on Scandinavian cinema in Poland, author of the monograph “Bergman's Mirror”, lecturer at the Film Art Organization Department of the Lodz Film School.
