Our first video recording with the use of fiber optics was the diploma show Eyes of the young girl. The camera signal ran from the Studyjny Theatre to School along an 11-kilometre fiber optic route.
The team of the Multimedia Service Department of our school made the first video recording using fiber optic links. The camera signal was being sent to the Studio at the School from the Studyjny Theatre, where the graduation show of acting students was being performed - "The Eyes of the Little Girl", directed by Wawrzyniec Kostrzewski.
“With the traditional method of recording, you need a transmission van, an entire mobile TV studio with all the necessary equipment and people to operate it. In the system we have now, the remote production system - a small part of the equipment goes to the production site - camera heads, cables, sound signal infrastructure and a very limited production and technical crew. The rest of the equipment and the crew remain in the studio and at the School”, says Wojciech Kubiak, Deputy Manager of the Multimedia Service Department and Technical Manager of the School's TV Studio.
The Studyjny Theatre is about 4 km away from the Film School in a straight line, an 11- kilometre fiber optic route. Thank to inter-university cooperation, we use optical fibers of the LODMAN Municipal Computer Network managed by the IT Centre of the Lodz Polytechnic, whose fiber optic points are located throughout the city, and our points located in the New Media building and in the building Z (Tv and Film Studios) and the Studyjny Theatre.
“The remote production system is possible thanks to the purchase of interfaces manufactured especially for us. It is a kind of extension of the camera cable through the fiber optic infrastructure”, says Wojciech Kubiak.
“The recording process itself is no different - communication between the studio and the crew is the same as in the studio, the cameras work the same, the image is mixed identically, the image and sound control is no different from the production on site. The only difference is the distance.”
The possibility of remote production greatly facilitates the work of the TV Studio, it is a great saving of time, effort and funds that would have to be spent on transport and installation of equipment and its service at the place of production. At the moment, the school has one of the best broadcast cameras available on the market (the image from them is recorded simultaneously in Ultra HD and HD), it also has the entire infrastructure necessary for implementation with the use of fiber optics. The recording of the show "Eyes of the young girl" was the first such recording and further activities are planned with the use of fiber optics. In addition to recording, live streaming is of course also possible.
