On September 16, Hubert Humka, our graduate and lecturer, invites you to an exhibition and his book launch at the Duży Pokój Gallery in Warsaw.
‘This is my third book, which closes the death trilogy,’ says Hubert Humka. ‘In the "Evil Man" project and book, I showed victims of murders and suicides. In "Death Landscapes" I talked about landscapes contaminated by trauma and death. In turn, "Eternal U", in my opinion, brings peace, tames death, and shows its completely different face.’
The Picture Doc Foundation invites you to the opening of the exhibition and the launch of the book ETERNAL U by Hubert Humka. The opening will take place on 16, September at 7 p.m. at the Duży Pokoj Gallery at 4/6 Warecka Street (on the corner of Kubusia Pochatka) in Warsaw. The exhibition will be open until 12, November 2023.
‘ETERNAL U is a story about the so-called good death and eternity,’ says the author of the project. ‘Through photographs of forests, and natural cemeteries where the dead are buried in biodegradable urns or coffins, marked only by a previously selected tree, I show a certain way of thinking about us as a code, an immortal chain of some larger universe. We all draw from it during our lives and then give it a part of ourselves.’
The exhibition space was arranged by the artist and the Picture Doc curatorial team to share the experience of searching for inner peace - accept one's own mortality and find solace in the thought of being let off in nature. The author encourages us to abandon for a moment, the breakneck attempt to understand and suggests that we sensitize our senses and tune our emotions to the experience to fully participate in the contemplation of the concept of immortality. The artist's work comprises the entire gallery space together with photographic images, installations and music by Szymon Wójcik.
The exhibition opening will be combined with the launch of Hubert Humka's book designed by Aneta Kowalczyk and published by BLOW UP PRESS. Its main axis is photographs of the forest, accompanied by negative modifications and embossed text about passing away. The graphic techniques used symbolize the perception of the world from the other side and the traces we leave behind.
ETERNAL U is the latest project of Hubert Humka, a visual artist with a background in photography, a graduate and lecturer at the Photography faculty at our School. In his work, he focuses on man, touching on the topics of death, love, evil and divinity. Humka presented his works at exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Author of appreciated books: EVIL MAN (Łódź Film School Publishing House, Łódź 2015) and DEATH LANDSCAPES (BLOW UP PRESS, Warsaw, 2018), which was nominated, among others, for the French Prix Bob Calle du livre d'artiste. Curated many exhibitions of Lodz Film School photography students’ works, both in Poland and abroad.
