On December 6, at 3:00 p.m., the star of the Lodz Film School will be unveiled at 66, Piotrkowska Street.
The Lodz Film School, one of the most well-known schools in the world, has been associated with our city from the beginning of its existence. It still enjoys unwavering recognition - every year it is among the 15 best film schools in the world according to the ranking of the prestigious American magazine "The Hollywood Reporter". This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the School, whose graduates created and still create Polish cinema, are the authors of outstanding film works for which they won the most important film awards in the world - Oscars, BAFTA, EFA, Venice Lions, Cannes Palmes d'Or, Berlin Bears. Directors, cinematographers, actors, screenwriters, editors, photographers, authors of animated films, film producers, visual creators - their names fill the credits of Polish and world films, lists of festival winners and exhibition catalogues.
The Lodz Film School is not just an address on Targowa Street, but also a genius loci - the sum of experiences, thoughts, emotions, ideas, dreams, creative struggles, accompanying the fears and joys, and ups and downs of people who have been part of the School over the years. It is impossible to list them all.
Currently, approximately 900 people study at the School at 4 Departments: the Department of Film and Television Directing, the Cinematography and Television Production Department, the Acting Department and the Film Art Organization Department. The University also runs a Doctoral School. The Film School in Łódź is not only a university but also a film producer. Each year, students take over 500 shooting days to make their films under the artistic supervision of lecturers and renowned filmmakers. This number corresponds to 14 full-length films. Every year, our students' short films, which span genres of fiction, documentary and animation are present at over 200 Polish and international film festivals (including the most important ones - Berlinale, Clermont-Ferrand, Cannes, Oberhausen, Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Annecy, Munich, Poitiers, San Sebastian, Los Angeles, Sundance, Kraków, Gdynia, Warsaw, Camerimage) winning numerous awards and recognition from viewers. The school also organizes film and theatre events - including the Theatre Schools Festival in Łódź, which has been operating for 41 years.
The School slogan in the Jubilee year: "We’ve been picturing the world for 75 years.", reflects the idea of the school functioning in the literal and technological sense, but also names the duties and values that have always guided the functioning of the School - be attentive and daring, honest and uncompromising; notice the world around you and do not turn your eyes away. The School, which has operated since 1948, has been a culture-forming place, an enclave of tolerance and freedom, unbridled imagination and openness toward other people.
The unveiling of the star of the Lodz Film School in its anniversary year is a symbolic honour not only of the school but also of all its graduates, lecturers, employees and students; past, present and future. For all of them, the School, a place so embedded in the spirit of Łódź, is home and base from which they set out into the world, bringing us - viewers - films, roles, images and photographs that delight, surprise, make us laugh, and sometimes hurt and outrage us, but they never leave us indifferent. From December 6, creators of films, shows, exhibitions and projects, creators of our emotions, will be symbolically present not only at Targowa, but also in Piotrkowska Street.
