Hoyte van Hoytema, who studied cinematography at our school, has won the most prestigious British film award for cinematography for the film OPPENHEIMER directed by Christopher Nolan. Congratulations!

OPPENHEIMER, a British-American co-production, is a biographical film - the story of the American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in creating the atom bomb. Nolan’s film dominated the British film industry’s most prestigious prizes by taking seven Baftas (out of 13 nominations), including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Leading Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.).

Hoyte van Hoytema has been nominated for a BAFTA Award four times; the previous nominations were for the film TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY by Tomas Alfredson and Christopher Nolan's films - INTERSTELLAR and DUNKIRK. The cinematographer was also nominated for an Oscar for the cinematography of the latter.

We also congratulate the creators of the film THE ZONE OF INTEREST by Jonathan Glazer. The film won as many as three statuettes for Outstanding British Film, Film Not in the English Language and Sound. THE ZONE OF INTEREST is a British-Polish-American co-production. The co-producer of the film is Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emotions), an excellent film producer who was recently granted the Doctor Honoris Causa degree by our School. The film received a total of nine BFTA nominations, including for Best Cinematography for a graduate of our Cinematography Department - Łukasz Żal. It was his third BAFTA nomination, the previous ones were for cinematography in IDA and COLD WAR, films by Paweł Pawlikowski. He was also nominated for an Oscar for his cinematography in these films.
