ENERGY ANGLES 1975-2024
Works from the Energy Angles series are an expression of a fascination with the problem of the existence of ANGLES as a kind of intuitive geometry. This MODEL, imagined by the human mind, has become the main motif of my artistic activity for many years. I wonder to what extent "geometry", which has only practical purposes, can function in art. To make this issue relevant, I decided to use ANGLES as an energetic cult sign in the form of a personal fetish. My intuition tells me that if I have three angles, I can employ them in any way I want on the so-called REALITY, but also in my biological motor skills. By doing this, I want to cause some kind of energy tension. This TENSION is supposed to be the meaning of this absurd work, i.e. a way of giving my own articulation to a matter that is already independent of me.
JÓZEF ROBAKOWSKI, artist, art historian, and academic professor, was born in Poznań in 1939. He studied monuments and art history at the University of Toruń and cinematography at the Leon Schiller National Film, Television and Theatre School in Łódź, where from 1970 to 2018 he was a lecturer, leading, among others, Multimedia Activities Studio. His artistic practice focuses on film, photography and other visual media. He has been involved in photography since the late 1950s, experimenting with photographic technologies, and creating photographic objects and installations. Analytical and conceptual series of works from the 1970s are an expression of his interest in the conditions of perception and the possibilities of photography. In the 1980s, he created a series of photos from photographed television images. In recent years, under the slogan "Fotomania", he has been creating monumental compositions from images found on the Internet as well as a mental multimedia archive entitled Facebook Pulse. He has been creating experimental films since the early 1960s. His innovative analyses of film message structures from the 1970s are considered classics of structural cinema. In the 1980s, using video techniques among others, he implemented the concept of "his own cinema" - auteur, often autobiographical records and recordings of performative activities. At the same time, he developed a critical thread regarding media policy and mechanisms of viewer manipulation in ideologized mass media. An important part of his practice is the video and film documentation of contemporary art and its avant-garde traditions. Co-founder of artistic groups undertaking experimental activities, including Oko (1960), STKF Pętla (1960–1966), Zero-61 (1961–1969), Krąg (1965–1967). Co-founder of the Warsztat Formy Filmowej (Workshop of the Film Form) group (1970–1977) and the Television Creative Group Stacja Ł (1991–1992). Since 1978, he has been running Galeria Wymiany in Łódź (founded together with Małgorzata Potocka). He has been the initiator of numerous artistic events, curator of several dozen exhibitions, publisher, and author of texts and publications. He lives and works in Łódź.
