The book MOVING MILLIONS. THE CINEMA OF JERZY BOSSAK by Marek Cieśliński, published by PWSFTviT and UŁ, is nominated for the 16th edition of the Polish Film Institute Awards.
The nominees were selected by the Chapter, which consisted of:
- Maja Chitro, culture expert and head of the culture department of ELLE,
- Maciej Dominiak, Director and co-founder of the FILMFORUM Association,
- Maciej Dydo, Director of the Copyright and Film Department at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage,
- Jola Myszka, co-manager of the Rialto Cinema in Poznań,
- Robert Piaskowski, Director of the National Centre for Culture,
- Karolina Vyšata, art historian and head of the documentation department at Zachęta,
- Karolina Rozwód, Director of the Polish Film Institute.
About the book:
The author carefully selects political and socio-cultural contexts which confirm Bossak's numerous initiatives for the development of Polish cinema and the influence of film on society. On the one hand, he mythologizes the character, on the other, he tries to approach Bossak’s conformist speeches (attempts to "fraternize" with the authorities) and decisions, the price of which was the possibility of developing his own career as a filmmaker in socialist Poland, with distance but also with understanding. Of particular importance are fragments in which Cieśliński's doubts and reflections appear on Bossak's attitudes which could disrupt the imagined image. The author discreetly provides the reader with quotes, references to the opinions of others and his own comments which are intended, at least in a sense, to express understanding for Bossak's behaviour in ethically and morally ambiguous situations, but he does not deny historical facts.
The editor of the publication was Dr. Monika Talarczyk, lecturer at the Film Art Organization Department.
The book is available at the Flm School bookstore: ksiegarnia.filmschool.lodz.pl
The winners will be announced on 25, September during the 49th Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia.
