The first workshop of the development project on series is behind us, during which students practiced creating concepts for a full season. Our guest was Katrin Merkel.
Students of directing, screenwriting and production will produce their own series projects for the third time. We wrote about the start of this year's edition of the project in the news: filmschool.lodz.pl/news
The first speaker was Katrin Merkel who led a workshop "Introduction to the development of a series project" on 13 and 14 March.
The workshop included topics such as: "Understanding the US writers' room system and adaptation in Europe", "plotting with beats - Story and character arcs", "understanding serial dramaturgy and the nature of serial storytelling", "plotting with beats - creating episodes in a team".
Katrin's methodology is a mix of lectures (on the introduction to the film series and the American "writers room" system) and practical exercises ("plotting with beats"). On the first day, students created the arc of an entire season and characters for a fictional series based on materials provided by the lecturer. On the second day, each team worked on a different episode of that series.

The programme is the result of long-term cooperation between the Lodz Film School and NETFLIX, the aim of which is the creative development of a new generation of filmmakers. The partners are united by common goals – discovering and supporting young talents, as well as enabling them to improve practical professional skills necessary to start a career in the changing film market. photos: Benedykt Rogala
