He lives on in the memories of his students. In reinterpretations of iconic works. In the inspirations of new generations of artists. On 1, April, we celebrated the 100th birthday of W.J. Has.

On this occasion, we transformed the Film School into HASA’S LABYRINTH – a dreamlike space full of references to the extraordinary work of the MASTER.

Get to know all the corners of the LABYRINTH. Although the road was winding and foggy, it beautifully led the participants of the celebrations through the multi-level art of the DIRECTOR.

CONFERENCE "PEOPLE OF HAS"

We started the day with a scientific conference entitled "Has's People", opened by: Milenia Fiedler, PhD, Rector of the Lodz Film School, and Katarzyna Mąka-Malatyńska, PhD, Vice-Rector for Science and Artistic Creativity, the initiator and organizer of the conference.

The conference was graced by the presence of Mr. Krzysztof Kwiatkowski, Senator of the Republic of Poland, and Minister Sławomir Rogowski, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, who addressed the participants:

"The figure of Has obliges us to reflect more deeply, first of all, on his work and on the films he left behind. Perhaps that is why we are meeting here today, to talk about it, to remember who Has was and why he is important to us. We are celebrating the anniversary of his birth, even though 25 years have passed since his death."

The following speakers delivered their speeches at the Conference:

* Prof. Marcin Maron (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin)
* dr Jarosław Grzechowiak (Lodz Film School)
* dr Piotr Śmiałkowski (National Archive-Audiovisual Institute)
* dr Michal Oleszczyk (University in Warsaw)
* dr Piotr Pławuszewski (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań)

HAS’S LABYRINTH
At 3:00 p.m. we opened the long-awaited LABYRINTH. At the inauguration of the event, the Rector of the Film School, Minister Sławomir Rogowski and Wanda Ziembicka-Has, member of the Honorary Committee of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Wojciech Jerzy Has, jointly welcomed the guests: rectors of Łódź universities, representatives of film and cultural institutions in Łódź and Poland, as well as many important, close and warm people.
But – above all – the following people celebrated his birthday: students, employees, lecturers of the Lodz Film School, as well as students, friends and collaborators of Wojciech Jerzy Has.

Thank you for participating in this important day for us!

"The 100th anniversary of the birth of Wojciech Jerzy Has. It is obvious that he is one of the most outstanding authors and visionaries of cinema, but for us he is a person particularly close to us - a lecturer, a master, a dean, a rector, a person who spent over two decades of his life here - in Targowa Street - and was a point of reference for the School community. Welcome to the HAS LABYRINTH, a space full of installations, exhibitions and happenings, from which the ideas of Has Cinema and the afterimages of his extraordinary personality emerge", said Rector Milenia Fiedler.

The Honorary Patronage over the event was assumed by the Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, and the Partner of the event was the Łódź Voivodeship. The event was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

Now let's enter the HAS’S LABYRINTH...

Discover the places at the Lodz Film School, which for one day were transformed into other, sophisticated, Has traces:

RECTORATE

"From Kraftówna to Felicja, or How to Be Loved" directed by Marcin Kluczykowski. Six actresses at different stages of their professional careers analyze the role of Felicja, trying to answer the question of how this character affects us today. The film was shown on screens.

H…A…S… - A 16-minute never-released interview with W. J. Has conducted by Mieczysław Małysz. Straight to the point about cinema and school. The film was shown in the Senate Hall.

"Hasówki" – selected student films made under the supervision of W. J. Has were shown in the screening room.

Photos found in Krzysztof Heyke's "negatives archive" were displayed in the screening room.

NEW MEDIA CENTRE BUILDING

"Common Room" – an exhibition of paintings by Piotr Kotlicki, inspired by the master's work, at the Szklarnia Gallery.

" Taming the World. Inspirations by Has" – an exhibition of students of the Department of Photography in the exhibition space on the first floor.

H BUILDING

"Time Boxes Part 1" – Michał Wojtasik, an interactive audiovisual installation inspired by the "Manuscript Found in Saragossa" in the theatre hall.

"If We Dream" – Mariusz Grzegorzek and Grzegorz Małecki. Common Cause and Work. School Atelier.

Z BUILDING

Labyrinthorium – Filip Gabriel Pudło, Mikołaj Marciniak, Grzegorz Piotrowski, Ewa Januszewska, Łukasz Biernat, Anna Zegar. Generative, analytical and alchemical spaces in the TV Studio.

"Dream under the Hourglass" – TAŻ ensemble, choreography by Małgorzata Stasiak – immersive audiovisual installation. A journey through memories, dreams and visions in the Film Studio.

"Unfulfilled Phantoms" performance by Katarzyna Kasica, Filip Szatarski, Paweł Szamburski, shown with no screen in the TV Studio.

"Time Boxes Part 2" – Michał Wojtasik in Room 102.

"Has consults screenplays" - tarot card readings for all confused artists. And in the bar, staged according to Jan Głąb's set design, where flavours and alcohols hit the head, stimulating forgotten neurons of the imagination, characters (ghosts?) wandered from Wojciech J. Has's films. The scenes at the bar were made by third-year directing students with their friends - actors.

One more special thing! During the celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth, Wanda Ziembicka-Has presented the Wojciech Jerzy Has Award to Małgorzata Szumowska granted "for uncompromising and consistent creation of cinema of deeply moving truth".
The CURATORS of the artistic spaces were our lecturers: Justyna Celeda, Jarosław Kamiński and Filip G. Pudło. The coordinator and PRODUCER of the event was Jan Ledworowski.

The HONORARY COMMITTEE for the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Wojciech Jerzy Has was composed of: Wanda Ziembicka-Has; Minister Sławomir Rogowski, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage; Robert Banasiak, director of the Feature Film Studio in Wrocław, and Rafał Syska, director of the National Centre for Film Culture.
