The Youth Cinema competition is devoted to fiction films and diploma films of young filmmakers – students and graduates of Polish film and art schools. Also films made within a scheme of professional skills improvement programmes for young filmmakers can participate in the competition. Twenty five films have qualified for the Youth Cinema competition of the 39th Gdynia Film Festival and they will compete for The Lucjan Bokiniec Prize for Best film, the Special Prize and many others.

Michał Oleszczyk, the festival artistic director, points out that the Youth Cinema competition is especially important for him this year: ‘It is this competition which in a way foretells the future condition of Polish cinema when young filmmakers start making full-length films. I get the impression that in recent years the Main Competition has overshadowed the Youth Cinema competition and it’s my intention to change this. This year the Music Theatre in Gdynia will be the main festival site, where the main screenings will be organized. I would also like to stress the significant role of young producers of the films screened who next to the film directors are taking the first steps in their careers. I am happy to say that we have great talented young directors and production managers. I would like them to feel that the festival in Gdynia is also their festival.
