The remarkable film director and Lodz Film School direction graduate has died in Warsaw at the age of 78.
She was one of the first women directors in Poland. For her debut film "Bez miłości", she received the Golden Lion at the Gdańsk Film Festival and the Golden Ducat at the Mennheim Festival. She is known for making films with strong women as the main protagonists. Her favourite actress was Dorota Stalińska who starred in "Bez miłości", "Debiutantka" and "Krzyk". For many years, the director and the actress worked together as a perfect creative team.
Barbara Sass made all her films with her husband Wiesław Zdort, who is also a Lodz Film School graduate, as director of photography.
‘Film directing is a profession for which you pay a high price. You pay for your sensitivity, the way you should absorb the world, the constant ‘exams’ you have to pass, for being a public person exposed to constant criticism, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman’, said Barbara Sass when she was interviewed by Barbara Hollender.
