The best television play of the last year „Skutki uboczne” was screened at the school cinema. Its director, in the meeting which followed, spoke about prizes, talent management, and avoiding disasters
The play „Skutki uboczne” (Side Effects) was recognized the Best Television Play of the last year at the Sopot ‘Dwa Teatry’Festival. The director talks about a great distance he has to winning prizes - I don’t take part in any contests. Of course, winning a prize expands our ‘ego’, but it also provides a healthy balance at times – I received my first prizes for a film for which I ended up being thrown out of the film school... When you are a student these prizes are important also for financial reasons – I remember I bought a computer with the first prize money. Then I used the computer to edit my next film. – that was great – said Leszek Dawid.
Leszek Dawid is a Lodz Film School graduate and lecturer. In 2004 he received „Polityka” Passports nomination for a documentary „Bar na Viktorii” (2003). He directed full-length feature films „Ki” (2011) and „Jesteś bogiem” (2012). This is how he justifies taking up a television play project - Making the two features almost one after the other („KI” & „Jesteś bogiem”), I had an impression I got sucked into it and lost touch with reality. I happily accepted the television project to stage „Skutki uboczne”. - It was very tempting to work with a good text, great actors and have 3 month to spend on the project. I have very good memories of the work on this play. Of course, one could say that television theatre means certain limitations – You work on the text which cannot be interfered with, you have to consult everything with its author, this time it was Petr Zelenka who luckily turned out to be a very open person. When making a feature you feel like god, cause everything depends on you. The play with an amazing cast including Krzysztof Stroiński, Anna Radwan, Dawid Ogrodnik, was shot by Łukasz Gutt („Ki” by Leszek Dawid, „Jeziorak” by Michał Otłowski).
Leszek Dawid also recalled the work with the actors. – Direction is like managing talents. On this play I worked with fantastic actors – Krzysztof Stroiński, Adam Ferency, Anna Radwan. Each of them required different type of attention, worked in a different way, saw the text differently. The director must tame these forces, make them relate to one another, direct them towards the same goal. I am always open to suggestions, it is very stimulating. There are directors who think they know everything best and know the answer to each question – I think it makes the team go passive. They are not involved enough. According to Leszek Dawid everything that is the most important takes place during the rehearsal stage and involves the relations between the actors, actors’ attitude to the text, and director’s efforts to put everything together. – Filming on the set is just about controlling the ball rolling, and avoiding disasters.
